Parkop launches Taurama back into sport

THE community at Taurama Barracks now have a new court to play basketball, volleyball and netball — thanks to National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop.
The Governor funded the reconstruction of the rundown basketball court which had been unused for many years.
The construction of the new multi-court, which can be used for the three sports, cost K90,000 to rebuild. The Taurama community marked the day with a warm welcome reception for the Governor when he officially opened the new court on Wednesday.
He was accorded a guard of honour, followed by a welcome by school children who lined both sides of the road to let him pass through led by female morobean dancers. Governor Parkop said he was happy to help upgrade their basketball court which had been neglected for many years.
He said part of his vision is to help restore the Taurama Barraks to its former glory.
He said last year, he supported and funded their first beautification program with K20,000 and increased it by K10,000 this year.
“This shows you are serious about being part of the overall development and change the city is going through,” he said.
He said the upgrading of the basketball court, which included the installation of flood lights, is a small improvement as there are many more big challenges left to address like the road, houses for the soldiers, lights and others.
The Governor also pledged K15, 000 towards the community to organise a basketball, netball and volleyball competition using the new court. He said the K15,000 will be released to them at the end of the year as prize money for the competition. Acting Commanding officer of the barracks, Major John Manua thanked the Governor for his assistance and urged the community to take care of the new court and to keep clean.

  1. Governor Powes Parkop is transforming Port Moresby city into a real city. He has done a lot since coming into office and a lot of the city residents are talking about him and have acknowledge what he is doing. He has a great vision for National Capital District.

Before coming into the NCD Governor's office in 2007 he has attempted several times,in two or three general elections, but he was not taken seriously. Most of his support at that time came from the informal sector because he was serving them through his legal services at an affordable rate. His service was appreciated whole heartedly because for grassroots or people in the informal sector, to have a lawyer who they can call "my private lawyer" was something. Grassroots and informal sector people know too the cost of hiring private lawyers.

Governor Powes has done a lot of incentives like putting up water fountains, bringing in bus services, beautifying the city, putting up monuments, establishing the 14 Mile Santuary etc.

Through these incentives, the people in the formal sector have now witnessed first hand what Governor Powes is all about. There is no doubt he will win the next general elections and he will do so in absolute majority using the Limited Preferential Voting system. I am predicting a landslide and if not, he may be the first National Capital District Parliamentarian to be declared winner in the coming 2012 PNG General Elections
