Remembering the dead

By OSEAH PHILEMON
YESTERDAY America remembered its war dead –from the day the nation of United States was founded until now.
Throughout the United States and the world, wherever Americans are serving – yesterday was their annual Memorial Day – and they all paused to remember the nearly one million men and women who sacrificed their lives for freedom and liberty over the years and in all wars up until the present day.
US Ambassador to PNG, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu Teddy Taylor paid tribute to his countrymen and women for their heroic sacrifices which had ensured that citizens of the United States enjoyed peace and freedom.
Ambassador Taylor also paid tribute to the allies of the United States for standing by America in times of conflict and fighting together side by side for freedom.
The Memorial Service was conducted at the Lae War Cemetery.
The Commander of the Australian contingent on the Pacific Partnership Program Commodore Ashley Papp also spoke at the service, paying tribute to the thousands of Australian servicemen and women who also sacrificed their lives for freedom in both Australia and the world.
Commodore Papp said 2,800 Australian servicemen were buried at the Lae War Cemetery which is maintained by the Australian War Graves Commission.
Commodore Papp revealed that his own grandfather had fought in New Guinea during the last war.
The commander of Pacific Partnership 2011, Commodore Jesse Wilson, paid tribute to the US armed forces for their efforts in defending peace and liberty to make America and the world a peaceful place in which to live.
He paid special tribute to all those men and women who paid the ultimate price for freedom – many of whom died in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands during World War 2. He said the war could not have been won without the efforts of Papua New Guineans in helping the allied forces during the New Guinea Campaign.
The brass band from the USS Cleveland provided sombre music for the service as wreaths were also laid in remembrance of the dead.
